Chapter 4 - Part 1

What Radically Changed?

As human beings, we appear to have a large appetite for information.  When it comes to Jesus and the existence of God, there are immense amount of information available.  In less than a second, with a quick search, we can receive over 99 million responses for that search.  Thus, the problem we face, is not on getting information, rather deciphering and extrapolating truth out of it.  All while remaining objective to not risk stacking the information to match a particular conclusion we have preconceived about this topic.  This can certainly happen as our senses might deceive us to see and hear only what we want to see and hear.

I never believed in the thought of selective bias described above until a friend sent me a short clip of a children’s show.  In the clip, it appears one of the characters is using a cussing word.  I was shocked, maybe a little horrified, and wanted to take immediate action against the show.  However, the friend pointed out that other people claimed the character said something else.  I knew what I heard, but to further investigate, and to give the show a chance, I replayed the clip over 100 times.  During replays, I would change, in my head, the phrase of the foul word to the originally intended clean phrase, and visa versa.  I was shocked to find out that when I change my inner thought to hear the clean I would hear clean.  When I change to the foul word, I would hear the foul word.

The video clip reminded me of the all the times I used to sing certain songs, only to find out, in embarrassment, that some of the words were wrong after reading the lyrics.  This is particularly why it is important to remain unbiased when searching a colossal topic such as Jesus being God.  To that point, however, although we can appreciate the necessity to remain unbiased, I have to admit, it is very difficult to do so with this topic particularly.  As a man of science and of all learning, I am asking myself to consider a human being from history to be the most powerful being in the universe.  Not as a movie, TV show, or a cartoon; but in real life.  This is too much to ask.  At the same time, I also have to admit that it is intriguing enough to at least find out.  Afterall, if it is true, I really want to know.

Above said, having a topic that generates 99 million search results can be very intense to study.  Good news is, with few glances over some of the information, we seem to find a convergence.  Not so much on what Jesus did when He was alive, although it appears He did incredible, potentially unrealistic, things.  The convergence seems to indicate that He actually died horrifically, but then rose from the dead!  This resurrection, while we glanced over it in the previous night as something the disciples claimed, seems to be the center point of our research.  In fact, it raises a radical question: Is the resurrection of Jesus a man-made event, or a historical event?

Our interest in the last question is derived from this hypothesis: if the resurrection event is man-made, then Jesus never really resurrected, and the Christians have been deceived.  On the
